As women we are bombarded with so many images of what “beauty” is supposed to look like. When you don’t fit any of those molds it can be challenging. However, the natural hair movement empowers women through the use of a myriad of traditional and untraditional beauty imagery. This movement has encouraged and elevated so many of us in ways we could never have imagined. There’s an invigorating confidence that makes me aware of the unique power we possess. Brands are clamoring for our attention, our dollars and our loyalty. It’s crazy because people still ask me if I think natural hair is a fad, and to that I laugh. It’s definitely here to stay. Today the movement is so robust and there is information, opportunities, pretty pictures and new products everywhere. How do you decipher? What do you leave or take away? This is my motivation when gathering content and fielding stories and topics to discuss in our magazine. After you flip through these pages I simply want you to be inspired, informed, confident and proud of where you are on your journey.
I choose Author Jotina Buck as our covergirl for this issue, not because she is a “natural hair” influencer, but because her message of changing your life by changing your words is powerful! There is more to us than hair. There are deeper levels and challenges that we’ve witnessed; severe illnesses, untimely deaths, unwarranted school suspensions, racial divide, corporate hair shaming and online bullying to name a few. While this magazine issue won't change the world, it will begin the dialogue so that we can collectively be a part of the solution. Until next time - Be Bold. Be Beautiful. Be Natural.
